Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of CMFRI hosts Impactful Marine Species Conservation Awareness Programme

On September 10, 2024, the Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) organized a vital awareness programme on the conservation of marine protected species at the Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour. This event marked a significant step in our ongoing efforts to protect and preserve our rich coastal and marine biodiversity.

Key Highlights:

  1. Focus on Protected Species: The programme covered various marine protected species, including whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and endangered fish species.
  2. Distinguished Speakers:
    • Chief Guest: Mr. Srikanthanatha Reddy, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), Visakhapatnam
    • G Mangama DCF, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park Visakhapatnam
    • Mr. Janaki Rao, DFO (retired), Regional Biodiversity Coordinator, APSBB
  3. Stakeholder Participation: The event saw active involvement from fishermen associations, trade leaders, government officials, and NGOs.
  4. Honoring Local Heroes: 25 fishermen from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam districts were felicitated for their exemplary efforts in rescuing endangered marine species.
  5. Impactful Discussions: The programme addressed critical issues such as coastal pollution, sustainable fishing practices, and the need for community involvement in conservation efforts.
  6. Future Directions: Recommendations were made to incentivize rescue efforts and increase awareness to promote mass involvement in marine conservation.

This programme, funded by the Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board and implemented by ICAR-CMFRI, underscores our commitment to marine biodiversity conservation. It represents a collaborative effort between government bodies, research institutions, and local communities to protect our valuable marine ecosystems.

The awareness programme was led by Dr. Joe K. Kizhakudan, Principal Scientist and HoRC of VRC of ICAR-CMFRI, Visakhapatnam and Dr. Pralaya Ranjan Behera, Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator of the project. Around 100 fishermen attended the event and given pamphlets on protected marine species of Andhra Pradesh.
