Union Fisheries Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh launches Marine Fisheries Census-2025 to be conducted by ICAR- CMFRI
On the occasion of the World Fisheries Day 2024 celebration organised by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt of India on 21st November in New Delhi, Shri. Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister of Fisheries launched the 5th Marine Fisheries Census (2025) to be conducted by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) with the support of the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India. The census will cover 1.2 million households across the coastal region. Since 2005, the marine fisheries census has been conducted every 5 years by ICAR-CMFRI.
Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister said that Marine Fisheries Census (MFC 2025) would focus specifically on the infrastructure status of marine fisherfolk while giving a detailed picture of the ecosystem in which this sector operates. The precise real-time data on the fishermen collected at the household level for the MFC 2025 will be a huge force in realisation, the Minister added.
Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, Hon’ble MoS and Shri. George Kurian, Hon’ble MoS addressed the audience. Shri. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary and Ms. Neetu Prasad and Mr. Sagar Mehra, JS too presented their views stressing the promotion of sustainable small scale mode that has been at the core of our fisheries. Mr. Manuel Barange, ADG, FAO too presented the take on this sector on this special day from the global perspective, which was a perfect foil to the video message of Ms. Vani Rao, India’s Permanent Representative to UN entities in Rome.
The function witnessed diplomats of more than twenty nations in attendance. DDG Fisheries, ICAR and NFDB chief were part of invited guests on the dais. Many government departments including those from all states and other central government organisations like ICAR Institute’s and DoF institutes alongside BoBP- IGO and other facilitating agencies like MSC were in the audience.
