Tuticorin Regional Station of ICAR-CMFRI organises Harvest Mela of cultured red seaweeds

Tuticorin Regional Station of ICAR- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) organised a harvest mela of cultured red seaweeds – IMTA on 8th November 2024 at Mullakadu coast of Thoothukudi under the NABARD-funded project on “Environmental Sustainability through Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA)”. 

Initially, 1.8 tons of seaweed were seeded in 1 plot (100 monolines of 15 m length). In total, 6.3 tonnes of wet biomass of red seaweed, Kappaphycus alvarezii were harvested. The Kadal paasi group carried out farming activities under the scientific and technical guidance of ICAR-CMFRI-NABARD. A gross income of Rs. 94,500 was generated with a 3.5 times increase in biomass in the 35-day culture period.
