Training programme on marine ornamental fish breeding and management at Kavaratti, Lakshadweep

The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), under the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India, sanctioned a project to ICAR CMFRI for the Establishment of a Marine Ornamental Fish Hatchery in Lakshadweep and the hatchery was successfully established at Kavaratti, Lakshadweep by ICAR CMFRI. This project aims to demonstrate the economic feasibility and sustainability of marine ornamental fish hatchery technology, create employment opportunities, and promote ornamental fish farming as an alternative livelihood for the island communities under the PMMSY scheme. Under this project, a three-day training programme on marine ornamental fish breeding and management for stakeholders commenced on 24.02.2025 at Kavaratti, Lakshadweep. Participants from various islands of the Lakshadweep (Kavaratti, Chetlat, Kiltan etc) are attending the training programme. The inaugural function was held on 24.02.205 in the conference hall of Department of Fisheries, UT of Lakshadweep. Dr Abdul Azeez, Scientist, ICAR CMFRI welcomed the gathering. Shri.Mohammed Kasim, District Fisheries Officer, Kavaratti was the Chief guest. In his address he appreciated the efforts of ICAR CMFRI for establishment of the marine ornamental fish hatchery at Kavaratti and also for organizing this training. Dr Anikuttan. K K Senior Scientist, presided over the function and in his address, explained about the project and the training programme. Dr Anuraj A ,Scentist, ICAR CMFRI, spoke about the rich resource potential of Lakshadweep waters and the scope of marine ornamental fish breeding. Dr Ambarish P Gop, scientist, ICAR CMFRI delivered the formal vote of thanks.
