Training Program on Marine Microalgae Culture Techniques at ICAR- CMFRI, Visakhapatnam

A five-day training program on Marine Microalgae Culture Techniques was inaugurated at the VRC of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Visakhapatnam, from November 25 th to 29 th, 2024. The training is being held under the Human Resource Development (HRD) Program of ICAR-CMFRI and is aimed at benefiting hatchery technicians and aquaculture officials from the industry.

The event was inaugurated by the Head of Regional Centre (HoRC) of ICAR-CMFRI, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the significance of the program in enhancing the skill set of hatchery professionals and contributing to the growth of the marine aquaculture sector. This hands-on training program is being attended by nine participants, including seven hatchery technicians sponsored by AU Avanti Aquaculture Skill Development Centre, Visakhapatnam, and two from SIFT, Kakinada.

The training program covers a wide range of practical topics crucial for marine microalgae culture, including:

  1. Isolation, monoculture, and batch culture techniques
  2. Mass culture methods and protocols
  3. Sanitation and hygiene standards for hatcheries
  4. Media preparation and inoculation techniques
  5. Introduction to live feeds
  6. Water quality parameters
  7. Harvesting techniques

The program emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience, with participants actively engaging in practical sessions to master the skills required for effective microalgae culture. It also covers critical aspects of hatchery management, ensuring that the trainees are well-versed in the latest practices and protocols to optimize production.

The training is being coordinated by Dr. Biji Xavier, Senior Scientist, and co-coordinated by Dr. Ritesh Ranjan, Principal Scientist; Dr. Sekar Megarajan, Senior Scientist; Dr. Jayasree Loka, Principal Scientist; and Dr. Joe K. Kizhakudan, along with technical support from the staff of the Mariculture Division at the Centre.

Through this initiative, ICAR-CMFRI continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing the technical capabilities of professionals in the marine aquaculture sector, which is crucial for the sustainability and growth of marine fisheries in India.
