ICAR-CMFRI promotes green practices during Swachhta Pakhwada

As part of the Swachhta Pakhwada 2025(December 16–31), the Digha Regional Station of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute organised a plantation drive on December 20, 2025 to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

The programme witnessed active participation from scientific, technical, administrative and contractual staff of the institute. A total of 10 saplings, including False Ashoka, mango and Indian jujube plants, were planted within the campus to enhance green cover.

An awareness session on the harmful impacts of single-use plastics was also held as part of the initiative. The talk highlighted responsible plastic use and effective waste management practices, reinforcing the importance of cleanliness and environmental stewardship.

The initiative aimed to sensitise both staff and the local community to eco-friendly practices in line with the objectives of Swachhta Pakhwada.

Swachhta Pakhwada 2025: ICAR-CMFRI holds webinar on sustainable plastic waste management

As part of Swachhta Pakhwada 2025, the Vizhinjam Regional Centre of ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) organised a webinar on sustainable plastic waste management on December 19, with the participation of scientists, technicians and students from various ICAR-CMFRI centres.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr Asha P.S., Principal Scientist, highlighted the growing threat of plastic pollution and underscored the need for collective action to address the issue. The technical session was led by Mrs Remya Sudhy G., Nodal Officer of Clean Kerala Company Limited, who spoke on Plastic Waste Management in Kerala: Role of Clean Kerala Company Ltd.

She explained the decentralised non-organic waste management system adopted in Kerala and detailed the end-to-end services provided by the company, including dry waste collection, segregation, recycling, disposal, income recovery and e-waste management, under the Local Self Government Department of the Government of Kerala.

An interactive discussion followed, with participants sharing views and raising queries on plastic waste challenges and solutions. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, marking another key activity under ICAR-CMFRI’s Swachhta Pakhwada campaign.

ICAR-CMFRI promotes community participation during Swachhta Pakhwada 2025

As part of Swachhta Pakhwada 2025 (16–31 December), the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) carried out a series of cleanliness and awareness programmes across its regional centres, with a strong focus on community involvement.
On 22 December, the Veraval Regional Station organised an outreach programme at Bhidiya, a major fisherfolk residential area, featuring a street play (Nukkad Natak) on cleanliness and waste management. Performed by students of Government School, Bhidiya, the play drew active participation from local residents and was followed by a mass cleanliness pledge.
The Visakhapatnam Regional Centre conducted a cleanliness drive in its residential quarters and nearby areas, reinforcing the message of collective responsibility for maintaining hygienic surroundings.
Meanwhile, the Calicut Regional Station organised a beach walk and Swachhata campaign at Paravanna Beach, Malappuram, in collaboration with the Fisheries Department, Coastal Police, college students, fishermen, and local body representatives. CMFRI scientists delivered awareness talks on environmental responsibility and cleanliness. A signature campaign was also conducted at Konad Beach, Kozhikode, where residents pledged their commitment to cleanliness.
The initiatives reflected ICAR-CMFRI’s sustained efforts to promote Swachhata through participatory and community-driven approaches.

Swachhta Pakhwada: Awareness on Household Waste Management

As part of Swachhta Pakhwada–2025 (16–31 December), ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) organised an awareness programme on recycling and reuse of household solid waste and wastewater on 26 December 2025 at its Tuticorin Regional Station. The programme, attended by farmers and youth from fishing villages, was inaugurated by Dr. Loveson Edward, Senior Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge, who highlighted the importance of wastewater recycling, rainwater harvesting and sustainable water use for agriculture and kitchen gardens. Mr. G. Stalin Packianathan, Sanitary Officer (South Zone), Tuticorin Municipal Corporation, addressed the participants on source segregation of waste, composting of biodegradable waste and recycling of non-biodegradable materials. 
The programme enhanced awareness on eco-friendly waste management practices and concluded with an interactive discussion session.

Swachhta Pakhwada: Community Plastic Waste Shramdaan Organised

As part of the Swachhta Pakhwada (16–31 December 2025), the Mangaluru Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) organised a large-scale community mobilisation and Plastic Waste Shramdaan at Tannerbhavi Beach, Mangaluru. Around 65 participants, including fishermen, women, youth, local residents, beachgoers and ICAR-CMFRI staff, actively took part in the cleanliness drive.
The programme focused on addressing the growing threat of plastic waste to coastal ecosystems, fisheries and community health. Volunteers collected and segregated plastic bottles, polythene covers, food packaging materials and discarded fishing nets, which were later handed over to the local waste management system for proper disposal and recycling.
Along with beach cleaning, awareness was created on reducing single-use plastics, adopting polythene-free alternatives, waste segregation, composting and the concept of “wealth from waste.” Participants also took the Swachhta Pledge and joined a signature campaign, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a clean and plastic-free coastal environment.

Veraval Regional Station, ICAR–CMFRI

As part of Swachhta Pakhwada 2025 and in line with the theme of community involvement and public awareness, the Veraval Regional Station of ICAR–CMFRI organized an outreach activity on 22 December 2025 at Bhidiya, a major residential area of the fisherfolk community. The programme featured a street play (Nukkad Natak) on the theme of cleanliness and waste management, performed by students of the Government School, Bhidiya. The performance effectively conveyed messages on sanitation, responsible waste disposal, and the role of the community in maintaining clean surroundings, drawing active attention from local residents.

The street play was followed by a mass cleanliness pledge, where community members, students, and staff committed themselves to adopting hygienic practices and keeping their surroundings clean. The activity witnessed enthusiastic participation from the local community and students and successfully strengthened public awareness on cleanliness and waste management. The programme reflected ICAR–CMFRI’s commitment to promoting Swachhta through community engagement and participatory approaches.
