The Swachhta Pakhwada 2024 Campaign was initiated at CMFRI HQ and various centres by creating awareness to staff members by displaying the Swachhta Pakhwada banner in CMFRI website, display boards and in strategic locations of various offices. Dr.Grinson George, Director, CMFRI administered the Swachhta Shapath to all the staff members at CMFRI, Kochi through hybrid mode on 16.12.2024.
A cleanliness campaign was organised at APJ Abdul Kalam Marg and walkway, Marine drive, Kochi on 18.12.2024. Miss Kerala Fitness 2019 title winner, celebrity fashion designer and Fashion entrepreneur Ms.Jini Gopal inaugurated the cleanliness campaign. NSS Volunteers of St.Theresa’s College, Ernakulam also actively participated in the cleanliness drive along with scientists, students and other staff members of CMFRI. A signature campaign to create awareness on Swachhta was also organised during the occasion. The participants carried placards with swachhta messages as part of the awareness programme. Paper, plastic and organic wastes were collected in separate garbage bags and handed over to Cochin Corporation for disposal.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Committee of ICAR-CMFRI celebrated Kisan Diwas as part of the Swachhta Pakhwada campaign by organising a workshop on Advanced Technologies for Waste Management for women self-help group members (Win Centre) from Chellanam and Kumbalangi fishing villages in Ernakulam District. The session on waste management was led by Shri. Thajudeen Aboobaker, CEO and Founder Urban Trash Pvt Limited. Urban Trash Pvt Limited is a Kochi based start-up which is actively involved in recycling all types of dry wastes including plastics, sanitary pads, used clothes, adult diapers and thermocol wastes. Awareness to the fisher women SHG members on the necessity of segregating the wastes at source was given during the session using short videos.
Demonstration on conversion of organic wastes to fish feed using the Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) based bioconversion system established at ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi was done by Dr.Sanal Ebaneezer, Scientist, CMFRI, Kochi. The fisherwomen visited the BSFL unit and were very enthusiastic in understanding the functioning of the unit The conversion of fish waste and canteen waste at CMFRI, Kochi using black soldier fly larvae-based bioconversion system was demonstrated to the SHG members. The production of fish feed using BSFL larvae and the production of compost from the waste was also explained. They expressed keen interest in using small-scale organic waste processing systems for management of household waste and income generation from fish wastes. CMFRI offered all support for organising local training programmes for fishlizer and other waste conversion models suitable for household waste management developed by the institute.
