Padmasree Dr Sosamma Iype inaugurates Winter School on genetic and genomic tools for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries management
Dr Sosamma Iype, a Padma awardee for her exceptional works on the conservation of the Vechur cow, inaugurated the 21-day Winter School on genetic and genomic tools for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries management at ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi on 15 th January 2025.
She emphasised the critical need for research to prioritise the well-being of farmers and society. Sharing her journey in conserving the near-extinct Vechur cow, Dr Iype said that the effort was not at all easy. She recounted the numerous hurdles she faced starting the conservation with just eight cows and the efforts to restore the breed. She urged the scientists to focus on biodiversity conservation, saying that genomics and other genetic studies are crucial to safeguard the rare species and biodiversity.
The Vechur cow’s conservation ensured the survival of a rare breed and contributed to food security, agricultural sustainability, and traditional knowledge.
“Understanding the intricate relationship between the species and its natural environment is necessary for successful conservation efforts. A scientist must genuinely interact with and love the species they are working to protect," Dr Iype added.
She further stressed the need for inter-institutional collaboration and a multi-disciplinary approach to effectively address challenges in genome decoding, gene editing and other aspects of research for conservation.
Dr Grinson George, Director of ICAR-CMFRI presided over the function.
The Winter School is designed to equip scientists and faculty members with the latest knowledge and techniques on a range of areas, including genome decoding of marine organisms. As many as 23 participants from across the country will be offered the opportunity to gain insights on advancements in genetic studies, with a special emphasis on management and conservation of ocean resources.
Dr Kajal Chakraborty, Head of the Marine Biotechnology, Fish Nutrition and Health Division; Dr Sandhya Sukumaran, Winter School Course Director; and Dr Sumithra T G, Course Coordinator spoke on the occasion.
