ICAR-CMFRI participated in the “Regional Capacity Building Workshop on Strengthening Regional Representation in Global Stock Status Reporting (FAO State of Stocks Index - SoSI): Preparing the BOBP-IGO Members for the FIRMS and SDG 14.4.1 Data Calls” organized by FAO and BoBP-IGO at Kochi during 29-31 May 2025. The workshop had participants from four member countries of BoBP-IGO: India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bangladesh. India was represented by participants from the Dept of Fisheries, Govt of India as well as from Fishery Survey of India, in addition to participants from CMFRI. In line with the significance of marine fisheries in India, the country has updated its list of fish stocks to be assessed in Indian waters at periodic intervals. The list currently at 217 will be increased to include 392 stocks, the highest number from any country in the region. As per the latest assessment of India’s marine fish stocks conducted in 2022, 91.1% of stocks assessed were healthy. The workshop was aimed at improving the representation of the region’s fish stocks in the FAO global database and global stock status reporting.
