Empowering Coastal Livelihoods through Habitat Enhancement
In a major step towards strengthening marine ecosystems and enhancing fishery resources, ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Visakhapatnam Regional Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh, successfully launched Artificial Reefs (ARs) off the coast of Visakhapatnam on 19th May 2025 under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
The event was flagged off with high enthusiasm as Shri Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, Hon'ble Minister for Agriculture, Co-Operation, Marketing, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development & Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh, ceremoniously waved the green flag onboard a fishing vessel. He was joined by Mr. B. Rajsekhar, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, and Mr. Rama Sankar Naik, IAS (Re), Commissioner of Fisheries, along with leaders of fisheries associations and members of the media.
Dr. Joe K. Kizhakudan, Principal Scientist and Head of the CMFRI Visakhapatnam Centre,and his team of scientists have meticulously identified suitable sites for deployment. As the first installment, ARs have now been deployed at 10 strategic sites, aimed at rejuvenating marine biodiversity and enhancing fish production.
In his address to the local fishing community, the Hon’ble Minister commended ICAR-CMFRI for its pioneering efforts in promoting marine cage culture, seaweed farming, and artificial reef deployment. He highlighted the critical role these technologies can play in doubling fishers’ incomes and ensuring sustainable marine fisheries.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in eco-restoration and livelihood improvement, reaffirming the commitment of the Government and scientific community toward sustainable coastal development.
