Training on breeding, seed production and farming of Maze Rabbit fish at ICAR-CMFRI, Karwar
Karwar regional station of ICAR –CMFRI conducted a 7-day hands-on training on breeding, seed production and farming of maze rabbitfish (Siganus vermiculatus) under All India Network Project on Mariculture from 6 th – 12 th January 2025. The training is being held under the HumanResource Development (HRD) Program of ICAR-CMFRI and is aimed at benefiting hatchery technicians and aquaculture officials.
The training programme was inaugurated on 6 th January 2025, Dr. C. Kalidas, Course-director, Principal Scientist and Scientist-In-Charge of Karwar Regional station welcomed the participants and dignitaries. Chief Guest of the Programme, Shri. Ravishankar C., IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Karwar Division, Inaugurated the programme. Guest of Honor Shri. Babin Bopanna K, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka, Karwar Uttara Kannada, addressed the participants. He stressed on the species diversification in mariculture and highlighted about culturing herbivores fish like Maze rabbit fish and its market value in coastal districts of Karnataka.
This hands-on training programme was attended by 15 participants, including academicians, hatchery technicians, farmers and students.

- Induced breeding and seed production of maze rabbitfish
- Year round breeding and seed production of maze rabbitfish, Siganus vermiculatus
- Larval rearing protocols of Siganus vermiculatus
- Live feed culture techniques
- Field trip to marine cage farms
The 7 day hands on training programme emphasized on imparting knowledge and skill development on breeding, seed production and farming of maze rabbitfish, It also covers critical aspects of hatchery management, ensuring that the trainees are well-versed in the latest practices and protocols to optimize production.
The training programme was coordinated by Dr. C Kalidas, principal scientist and Tanveer Hussain, scientist, Karwar Regional Station of ICAR-CMFRI, Karwar.
