ICAR-CMFRI’s Sagarika Aquarium turns 30, opens a window to the wonders of the sea
A world of colourful marine life awaits visitors at the Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) Regional Centre in Vizhinjam, which is celebrating its 30th year of bringing the wonders of the underwater world closer to the public.
Established in 1996 at Vizhinjam, Sagarika has grown into a popular centre for marine research, education and conservation. The aquarium showcases more than 80 species of marine organisms.
Colourful ornamental fishes are among the major attractions, while visitors can also see sharks and rays, sea anemones, sea urchins, marine shrimps, crabs, lobsters and a variety of other fascinating marine life. The displays offer visitors an opportunity to observe marine organisms at close quarters and understand the diversity of life beneath the waves.
The aquarium is particularly popular among children and students, offering an engaging way to learn about marine biodiversity and the importance of protecting ocean ecosystems. For families and nature enthusiasts, it provides an opportunity to combine leisure with a glimpse into the rich marine life of the Indian seas.
At Sagarika, every species tells a story, and every story brings us one step closer to understanding, appreciating and protecting our oceans. Sagarika is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Entry is ?40 for adults and ?20 for children.
