Trial on Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA)

Integrating the seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii with cobia Rachycentron canadum farming was initiated at Munaikadu (Palk Bay) in a participatory mode with fishermen group.

  • 652 kg of cobia was harvested (average weight 3.25 kg) along with 2,700 kg wet weight of seaweed.
  • Experimental cage farming of silver pompano Trachinotus blochii with low value fishes as feed was attempted

      • 2100 silver pompano fingerlings with an average size of 14.90 cm TL length and 48.8 g weight were stocked in HDPE circular sea cage with 6 meter dia and 3 meter depth. The fishes are fed with minced low value fishes @ 10% of their body weight.

      • After 240 days of culture, the fishes attained an average length of 23.65 cm and average weight of 207.43 grams inthe grow-out cage.
